Brief description: The shrine at Gangotri was built by Amar Singh Thapa, a Gorkha commander, in honor of the River Ganga, it is one the most popular pilgrimage shrines in India. These days it is easily accessible to pilgrims, as there is a motorway right up to the shrine at Gangotri. The more intrepid pilgrims travel to Gaumukh, the source of the river Ganga.
Gaumukh is named so because it resembles the mouth of a cow, a holy deity for Hindus, is just 19km above Gangotri and is the origin of the River Ganga but at this stage the river is known as Bhagirathi and later with the confluence of river Alkananda it is named as Ganga. The route to Gaumukh serves as an ideal trekking route for avid adventurers. The springs of the river Bhagirathi prevail here. The route is embedded with deodar, birch and the padma trees. Tapovan is an extension of the Gangotri –Gaumukh trek. Tapovan is known for its enchanting meadows with wild flowers and bubbling brooks. It is also the base camp for the Shivling peak.

Brief Description: RoopKund became famous when large number of Human bones was reported to be found here. After that explorers and scientists have tried to explain the mystery but it helped in deepening the mystery rather solving it. Two theories have emerged and one is that these bones are of Gen.Zorawar Singh of Kashmir and his men who were coming back after raiding China-Tibet in 17th Century. Second opinion, which is also believed by locals, is that large numbers of people visiting Homkund were trapped in avalanches and snowstorms and got killed. Not even a single man survived to tell the tale.
