Himalayan Club Delhi organises – a multimedia presentation on the 3rd August 2014, of the recent exploration in June 2014 to discover ..

the ancient connect between Baspa Valley and the Chor Gad Valley (Smugglers’ Valley) in the Nelang watershed. Ashu M and his team make the presentation..

“Chunsa” or “Chaunsah” was the ancient name of Nelang village (Exactly like “Song”/ “Sang” was the name of the Jadung village in the same valley). J B Fraser mentioned these names for the first time in his 1816 narrative about his maiden foray to Gangotri.

“Khaga” in the Pahari languages means a high pass above the permanent snowline. The Chunsa Khaga hence was a snowy pass used for transaction by the Kinnaur people with Nelang.

It is mentioned in all earlier accounts that the pass was essentially used by the Kingdom of Bushaher for the purposes of tax collection for which armed caravans of the King used to come over to Nelang over this pass. The pass was supposed to be of easy terrain but one of high snow challenge.

For the uninitiated, Nelang is that forbidden valley to which a road leads to the left exactly when Gangotri is 8 Kms away.

The existence of the Chunsa Khaga is mentioned in 3 separate book written in different times in history bearing similar descriptions. The expedition aimed to discover the pass matching these descriptions and was successful in finding the gateway from Nelang to Kinnaur.
